Emer’s Vote of Confidence

The government has just won a confidence vote, 85–66. They have more than two years to run. Here, EMER HIGGINS counters Local News’ scathing coverage of Fine Gael. She is frank about how world events have led to a “broken contract” with the middle classes, but now presents her party’s detailed plans as to how it can be mended. Fine Gael, she argues, is best-placed to shape and oversee a brighter future

THE LAST two and a half years have taken a huge toll on society. Lives and livelihoods have been affected in a dramatic way, and in Dublin Mid West we have felt that toll. As we emerge from the pandemic, the aim for myself as the government TD for our community is to build back our society in a better way, while being mindful of the many challenges ahead. I am working with colleagues in government to deliver some important changes that I hope will make a real difference.

Here are what I see as the four biggest challenges:

• Health
• Housing
• Cost of Living
• Climate Change.

These priorities were reflected clearly to me by so many of my constituents in my pre-budget survey. People talked about tackling hospital waiting lists; providing early intervention to children who need it; giving people the opportunity to aspire to own their own home; and tackling the climate crisis.

Above all, my constituents highlighted the need to put more money back into people’s pockets, and generally respond to the rising cost of living. So how will I, my party and the government address these concerns? » MORE
